Burnley Circle has held its
meetings at Burnley Football Club for more than 10 years and has enjoyed a good
relationship with the Club over that time not least sharing in its triumphs and
disappointments. This year the Club won the Football League Championship
to secure promotion to the Premier League again.
To celebrate, the Club
arranged for the trophy to be on display at the July Circle meeting.
Nicknamed ‘The Lady’, the League Championship trophy is one of the oldest
sporting trophies in the world. It was designed and made for the 1890/91
season by the craftsmen at family-owned Vaughton’s in Birmingham, who make The
Football League's medals to this day. The engraving details the 12 founder
members of the League, including Burnley. The Trophy, until the advent of
the Premier League, was presented to the winners of the first division.
The photo shows some of the
Circle members with the trophy. The Circle generously allowed visiting
brothers who are supporters of other football clubs to bask in the reflected
glory.
