Miss
Cathy Place, 18 years, a Parishioner of S.S Mary & Michael’s, Garstang,
volunteered
to
visit the Catholic Mission in Chivuna, Southern Zambia, which has been
supported by S.S. Mary
&
Michael’s for the past 14 years. The purpose of her visit was to teach English
in the Mission’s Primary School and to help her with this she was allowed to
learn teaching skills in S.S. Mary & Michael’s School prior to going.
In
addition to this, and despite having to study for her ‘A’ levels prior to her
departure, Cathy undertook a number of fund raising activities, one of which
was a sponsored sky dive, raising altogether
£2,500 for the Mission. Cathy was also given a grant towards her
expenses from the Catenian Bursary Fund.
Cathy
spent a number of weeks in Chivuna at the latter end of the summer and found it
a very interesting experience. Her excellent fund raising efforts enabled the
Mission to purchase a new computer for the Primary School; purchase medical
supplies for the Health Centre; sponsored 22 children’s education for 2 years, and
help villages around the Chivuna Community. Well done Cathy.
Not
long after returning home Cathy went to study at Nottingham University and
during her vacation at the end of her first term, she gave an excellent
illustrated talk about her experiences to Garstang Catenians on the evening of
the Circle’s Christmas Dinner.
The
photograph shows Garstang President Colin Barnes congratulating Cathy at the
end of her talk.
