Provincial Bowls Competition

 

The Provincial 'annual' bowls competition took place at Moor Park Bowling Club, Preston, on Sunday 18th July.  This was a one-day event which proved very successful as Covid prevented any other form of competition and was organised by Bros Mike Finley and Ted Donnelly.

 

 

Teams from six Circles took part; Accrington, Burnley, Longridge, Lytham St Annes, Preston 14, Preston 144. They were divided into two mini leagues and played two matches each.  There were two greens at our disposal. The final was between Accrington and Burnley who topped their respective leagues.  Accrington won 4-1 and Brother Provincial President Bernard presented the trophy to the winners.

 

 

Preston & District Circle's Charity BBQ

Brothers, families and friends of Preston 144 Circle held a Charity BBQ to raise money for Brother President, Shaun Horsfield's chosen charity, Aid to the Church in Need (ACN).

The BBQ was held in a 'medieval' barn at Haighton Hall Farm.

The money raised is still being counted (!) and along with a number of generous donations is expected to raise about £1700 for the charity.

Preston & District Circle's Mass for Vocations.

A group of brothers and wives attended the annual
Mass for Vocation recently.
The Mass was celebrated in the beautiful, old church of
St. Mary's, Newhouse (Barton) by Canon Robert Horn (Rtd.) 
He reminded the congregation of the need to pray daily for vocations to the priesthood and the religious life.

 

Preston & District 'Trainspotters'

Preston & District Circle's Trainspotters' Group chose Liverpool as the venue for the recent outing.

First stop was at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King

We arrived just as a very 'posh' wedding was about to begin.

Next it was down 'Hope Street'(!) to the Philharmonic pub for our first drink.

This was followed by a walk through the city centre to the dock area in search of somewhere to dine.

Eventually we settled for Guosto's Italian menu.

After a long lunch stop, we visited the Liverpool Maritime Museum (We had to have a bit of 'culture'!)

Following the visit, it was a long walk back to Lime Street railway station calling at two Wetherspoons pubs on the way!

Burnley Circle's forthcoming Centenary

 

NEW VENUE, NEW NIGHT

 On the 13th July, the second Tuesday, members of Longridge Circle met  at Ferraris Country House Hotel, the new venue for Circle meetings and meals, under the supervision of Susan Ferrari.

With social distancing and careful planning Richard Maher chaired the 40th AGM of the Circle and it was agreed that with the presentation of accounts that no subscriptions would be charged for the current year.

Richard then installed President Ted Donnelly who in turn installed Vice President Peter Jones. All other officers remaining in position.

The meeting opened with prayers and the comment that these should be meaningful, appropriate and thoughtful.

There was little business with not much happening in the 15 months since our previous meeting. With AGM, Installations and meeting lasting 28 minutes there was just time for a group photograph before joining tables of 6 to enjoy a hearty meal and good company.

All present agreed it was good to be back and looked forward to our next meeting on Tuesday 10th August which will be a Ladies and Guests Night.
