CATON TO HEYSHAM CYCLE RIDE

Heysham is one of the most unspoiled villages in the whole of England. Its single street is lined with restaurants, cafes, 17th Century cottages and a pub.
The street leads down to the rocks on the shore and close by there are two ancient christian sites.
Then it leads to Heysham Head once the site of pleasure gardens and a carting circuit that witnessed the early triumphs of a very young Nigel Mansell.

So no wonder 9 cyclist set out from Caton on Saturday 11th May to enjoy the ride and scenery along the way.
The sounds of carting have now been replaced by the quieter nature  of cycling in an area looked after by the National Trust.

Those who know the area well will recognise the ruins of St Patrick's Chapel which stands on the exposed cliff tops at Heysham. The Chapel is thought to date back to the 8th century and is one of the oldest religious buildings in the North West.

From the site there are impressive views of Morecambe Bay and the southern fells of the Lake District.

Regular readers will be wondering where food was consumed. I have no doubt food was involved somewhere along the way, as the introductory paragraph and signpost both hint at, but have not received any photographic evidence to date!!

LONGRIDGE WALKING GROUP

On Wednesday 24th April this month’s walk started and finished in the village of Calder Vale, an area of much history.
The name Calder is thought to be derived from the Old Norse "kaldr" (cold) and it certainly can be even when warmer all around!!

We walked anti-clockwise which was  flat to start with, then a steady 130 foot (which it transpired was a 130 METRE) climb up hill, for one mile to the main road.

I'm sure it's this way

From the top of the hill it’s easy and down hill  to the church

until finally we walked through the wood  covered with bluebells - the whole purpose of going.

It really is an awesome sight and if readers have not experienced it, it is well worth a visit before the end of "bluebell season".

We cannot guarantee that if you go down in the woods today you're in for a big surprise but some of the ladies found something surprisingly hilarious.

International visitor at LSA meeting

Lytham St Annes Circle were very pleased to welcome Bro. Tony and Kathi Jordan from Harare, North Circle.  Whilst in the UK visiting family Tony and Kathi came north to stay with Bro. Nick and Kate Hanley of Chorley Circle.  Nick and Kate had been home-hosted by Tony and Kathi when they visited southern Africa with GP David Rowley in 2016.  After the meal Tony gave a short talk about life in Zimbabwe.  Bro. President Mike King then presented Tony with a Lytham St Annes Circle tie as a momento of his visit.

Thank you Jim

At the splendid St George's Night Dinner Dance organised by Blackburn with Ribble Valley Circle, the last event in the Catenian year 2018-19, out-going Provincial President Jim Livesey was presented with a crystal decanter and four glasses by Bro. (ex President) Ken Tyson on behalf of the Circle Presidents of 2018-19 in recognition of his commitment during his term in office.

I thank the photographer for his gallant effort in taking the photo, the presentation was made late in the evening!!!
