A NEW BROTHER FOR CHORLEY CIRCLE

At its March meeting Chorley Circle enrolled a new Brother,
Jack Knight.
Jack originated from Fleetwood and started his working career in the brewing industry with Whitbread’s.
He emigrated to South Africa to join South African Brewers, and it was there that he met and married Marion, after converting to the Catholic faith.
His employers asked him to move to China for a period of 2 years to advise on a joint venture with a Chinese brewer; those 2 years eventually became 17! During that time Jack and Marion were active in supporting the Church, realising the problems that it faced in that country.
They returned to England some 3 years ago and settled in Chorley, in St. Gregory’s parish, where they are active both in parish and diocesan affairs. Jack is a keen golfer, bowler, and skilful darts player – his expertise already having been noted by the Circle.

Jack and Marion are photographed with Chorley President Brother David Walmsley.

Chorley Circle visit Poland

On 29th June a group of 11 Catenians and wives left Liverpool Airport for a 4-night break in the beautiful Polish city of Krakow. The trip was organised and led by Brother Nick Hanley of Chorley Circle and his wife Kate. The group included Brother Robert Thompson, President of Province 10, of Lytham Circle and other members of the group represented Burnley, Longridge, and Garstang Circles.
Visits to Auschwitz and the Salt Mines were organised and there was plenty of free time for shopping or simply to relax and see the city sights including a visit to the Jewish Quarter, a sail on the River Vistula or just a stroll through the parks. The restaurants of Krakow are to be recommended for the quality of the food and wine and their very reasonable prices. The group took full advantage of their fare. Except for the final day, when it poured with rain, sunshine prevailed and the daytime temperature hovered around 31 degrees.
The trip was completed by a dim sum lunch at the Tai Pan Chinese Restaurant on the return from Liverpool Airport.
To sum it up – a good time was had by all.

The group was photographed by a willing passer-by outside
St. Mary’s basilica after attending Holy Mass; Nick and Kate (in the ‘shades’) are flanked by the group.

Accrington Brothers have Drive!

The Circle Car treasure Hunt took place on the 19th of July, reputedly the hottest night of the year, due to great pre-planning!

Eleven cars were flagged off by John and Trish Whiteside on an easy ten mile jaunt through the beautiful Ribble Valley Villages.

Clues varied from the price of petrol to the exact names of churches, St Charles Borromeo at Rishton caught a few out as it has been known simply as St Charles for ever!

Things to collect included flora and fauna and the hardest these days, a used match!   Forty two brothers wives family and friends applied their brains to the task and ended up for Supper at The Swan with Two Necks in Pendleton, near Clitheroe. A CAMRA pub of course and enjoyed a delicious supper in a balmy 28C.

The winners were the team lead by Andrew and Karen Dabrowski our vice president….. they untangled the clues collected the bits and did not have to back track much!  No one got lost or gave up, which was a first, it must have been too easy really.

Burnley Circle has held its meetings at Burnley Football Club for more than 10 years and has enjoyed a good relationship with the Club over that time not least sharing in its triumphs and disappointments.  This year the Club won the Football League Championship to secure promotion to the Premier League again.

To celebrate, the Club arranged for the trophy to be on display at the July Circle meeting.  Nicknamed ‘The Lady’, the League Championship trophy is one of the oldest sporting trophies in the world.  It was designed and made for the 1890/91 season by the craftsmen at family-owned Vaughton’s in Birmingham, who make The Football League's medals to this day. The engraving details the 12 founder members of the League, including Burnley.  The Trophy, until the advent of the Premier League, was presented to the winners of the first division.
The photo shows some of the Circle members with the trophy.  The Circle generously allowed visiting brothers who are supporters of other football clubs to bask in the reflected glory.
