Bristol Conference

There was a good contingent from Province 10 at the First Great Britain National Conference most of whom had managed to book to dine on the aptly named SS Great Britain.  The 'guest' speaker was the recently deposed last Grand President, Bro. David Rowley.

Nearly half of the attendees managed to assemble themselves outside Clifton Cathedral after Mass to be caught on camera.

Accrington Circle installed their new President, Andrew Dabrowski, at their meeting held on Sunday 7 May at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel, Clayton-le-Moors. Around 70 people sat down to dinner including many of Andrew’s Fellow Presidents’ and their ladies. Andrew is keen to increase membership of the Circle and will be working hard to do so in the coming months.

LONGRIDGE CIRCLE: PRESIDENT SUNDAY

Many members, wives and family members of both Longridge 286 and Preston 144, gathered at St Mary's Fernyhalgh to celebrate their faith through Holy Mass and were inspired by a thoughtful sermon from Fr Mario with Mass concelebrated by Fr Ernest.

At the end of Mass the Parish community welcomed Ted and Janis with Longridge Catenians in a lovely way by presenting each lady with a rose and each man with a lighted candle. A gesture appreciated by all present. Thank you St Mary's.
Most of the gathered assembly then retired to Ferraris and a fine lunch in wonderful company giving true meaning to "together in friendship and faith".

LONGRIDGE CIRCLE'S MANCHESTER RAMBLE

“THE MANCHESTER WALK”

ON Wednesday 17^th May, led by Peter Russell, 13 intrepid walkers met at Piccadilly Station (Platform 1) and followed the Rochdale canal with running commentary on the links and buildings viewed passing under Oxford Road, through the Deansgate Tunnel, Gaythorn Tunnel and Knott Mill Tunnel to join the Bridgewater Canal. A visit to the Roman Fort left no time for the Science Museum but time for lunch.

After lunch Peter had booked us in at Chetham’s Library to look at, in particular publications “The Preston Pilot” (1841-47) and “The Preston Oyster and Parched Pea Society” which could have been a forerunner of Catenians as it appears these gentlemen gathered “to eat, drink and have a good time”

A great day enjoyed by all ended with the train journey home and 13 tired but happy walkers.

The following letter has been received from Jack Linass' grand-daughter, Grania Cookson. Can you help her?

Good Evening, 

I'm so sorry to bother you however i am seeking some advice. My name is Grania Cookson and i am a second year veterinary student at the University of Nottingham however originally from Windermere. My granddad was a keen Catenian and was president in the Westmorland area around 10 years ago. Unfortunately when i was 12 years old he passed away from an enlarged heart. It is for this reason that i am writing to you today. Losing my grandad changed my life forever. I lived with him and with my dad not having a big role in my life my grandfather meant the world to me. He would often take us to Catenian events and would show us off to all of his friends. 

I'm not the most sporty person and absolutely hated cross country at school yet loved ballet and netball. However having had surgery 2 years ago and being told that i would never be a runner i have decided to take my grandads attitude towards life and to not let anyone tell me i can't do anything. He was always the one to tell me to 'go for it' with anything new i wanted to try. It is for this reason today that i am emailing you. 

I have signed up to run as a red heart runner in the Great North run in memory of my grandad Jack Liness and in doing so must raise £400 without gift aid for the British Heart Foundation. I am aware that many of your members may have moved on however am sure that some may remember me (granted i am nearly 21 so it was a long time ago since they last saw me) and if they do not remember me i am sure they remember Jack.

Province 10 Snooker Competition

Burnley Circle's team beat Accrington Circle's team in the final of the 2017 Provincial Snooker Competition. 

The winning team received the trophy from 

Provincial President (2016/17) Robert Thompson.

Broughton-in-Craven Circle - Dining Out!

Broughton in Craven dine out with Past-President, Bernard and Elaine Swarbrick.

Members, wives and friends shared an excellent meal at Marios' restaurant in Barnoldswick. 

Broughton Circle's new President, Chris Beesley, thanked Bernard for stepping in as President when the Circle was struggling to find a president.

Bernard has had an excellent year. They were also delighted to see Elaine in better health and thanked her for all her efforts over the year. 

Annual retreat

Preston South Circle again arranged a very successful retreat at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire and the participants managed to get there and back without their journeys being disrupted by the Tour de Yorkshire 3-day cycle race.  The photo shows eight of the nine 'retreaters' from three Circles waiting for the Prior, Fr Terence Richardson OSB, to start the last session on the topic of Life in the Early Church.
