Garstang Circle have an interesting evening!

Last year Miss Hannah Spencer, 23 years, a parishioner of St. Mary & St. Michael's Parish, Garstang, undertook three months voluntary work in Nepal with the Voluntary Overseas Program to help the people there whose lives were devastated by the earthquake in Kathmandu. 

Prior to going to Nepal, Hannah was the recipient of a grant from the Catenian Bursary Fund to help her with her work dealing with  the struggling people in Nepal.

Recently, as promised, Hannah gave a very interesting talk about her experiences to Garstang Catenians, their ladies and visitors following the Circle's monthly meeting at the Garstang Country Hotel. 

Hannah told her captivated audience she stayed with a family in Kathmandu and carried out a number of projects as part of the Voluntary Overseas Program, which will no doubt benefit the local community for years to come, with probably the most fulfilling project being educating the children, including teaching them to prepare their C.V's.

Hannah showed a video she had made followed by a short talk and then invited questions from her very attentive audience, including two Past Grand Presidents and a Bursary Fund Committee Member.

   

Although Hannah found her voluntary work a very fulfilling experience, it was by no means a relaxing sojourn

in the sun, for she had to endure primitive sanitation throughout and a number of health problems.

Hannah organised a number of fund raising projects before she went to Nepal and with the £600 Catenian Bursary award it helped her to smash her target and raise £1,466 for the Voluntary Overseas Program.

Well done Hannah.

LONGRIDGE QUIZ

LONGRIDGE CIRCLE ANNUAL QUIZ

Friday 10^th February 2017

After a fiercely fought competition, but in a reasonably friendly atmosphere, the outcome of the 2017 encounter at Longridge Golf Club was decided.

After winning the first two year’s competition the runners up this year were the “DTs” with 60 points, a score which won them last year’s quiz.

The winning team on the night with a magnificent 65 points was “Five Go Quizzing” receiving the coveted Longridge Annual Quiz Trophy and a cash prize of £60.

The winning team of Andrew White, Elaine Carroll, Margaret White, Moira Barron and Bob Barron receiving their prize from Joe.

Thanks go to John Waddingham’s and Anthony Donlan’s teams for donating their winnings for the devilishly difficult “Dingbat” and “Anagram” competitions to the Hubert Wilcock Trust Fund.

A good night was had by all in true Catenian style with good fun, good food and good company. See you all next year!

Chorley Circle's Winter Ball

On Saturday, January 28th, Chorley Circle President Brother Bill Critchley and his wife Pauline welcomed 81 brothers, families and guests to the Circle's Winter Ball at Shaw Hill Golf Resort & Spa Hotel. 

Guests included Grand Vice-President Peter Rogers of St. Helens Circle, with his wife, Joan, Province 10 Director, Mark Conroy of Burnley Circle, with his wife Maxine, and Province 10 President, Robert Thompson of Lytham St. Annes Circle. After dining and speeches were over, everyone enjoyed a disco and participated in 'stand-up bingo' and a tombola stall with all funds raised going to Brother Bill's charity - Friends of the Holy Land.

Broughton in Craven Circle celebrate Burns' Night

Broughton in Craven Circle celebrated the birth of Robert Burns at Colne Golf Club recently.

Ladies, brothers and friends celebrated Burns' Night with a meal of haggis, beef and Tipsy Laird. Alongside this were readings, jokes and song as Brother Bernard Hayes led us through a rendition of Flower of Scotland. A great night for all. Thanks to Brother Joe Laughlin for his address to the Haggis.

Darts and Dominoes winners

The annual Phil Morris Darts and Dominoes Evening at St Michael and St John’s Catholic Club Clitheroe organised by Blackburn with Ribble Valley Circle was again well attended.  The dominoes competition was for individuals, each having to play ten games, against three other competitors.  The winner amassed a total of 43 points out of a maximum 50; he won seven of his ten games and met a lot of Brothers as the winner of each game had to move to another table!

The darts team competition is of the knock-out variety and the two teams who reached the final were  Chorley Circle and Preston 14 Circle.  With only one change of team member Chorley Circle again beat the opposition to retain the shield.

Congratulations to all winners and thanks to Blackburn with Ribble Valley Circle for yet another successful evening.
