Blackpool are Champions

Blackpool & the Fylde Circle entered the bowls final after beating Accrington 3-2 and their opponents, Preston 14, had dismissed Furness 4-1.  The result of the final was also 4-1 but against Preston this time.  All the games were competitively fought and there were many twists and turns.  The weather played its part as the afternoon sun cooled so the green slowed.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT BLACKPOOL HAVE WON THE TROPHY – CONGRATULATIONS.
Many thanks are due to Carol and Mike Finley for organising and controlling the event and laying on an excellent buffet again.  Thanks also are due to those who came to support the teams and to St Joseph’s Bowling Club.
The winning team [l to r] Des Stevenson, Mike Grayston, Provincial President Ken Dennis,
Geoff (captain) & Catherine Stubbs and Frank Morlidge

The runners up [l to r] Andrew Shore, Paul Wilding, Provincial President Ken Dennis, Steve Edge (captain),
Steve Vanden (with lucky? hat) and Paul Garstang

Garstang in Bloom

After Garstang Circle's August meeting Brothers and their ladies from across Province were entertained by guest speaker for the evening,  Mrs Norah Hoyles MBE of Garstang. Her talk was on the history of 'Garstang in Bloom', an organisation entirely of volunteers of which Mrs Hoyles was chairperson since its inception 28 years ago until last year.  The 'Garstang in Bloom' volunteers, including some Catenians, have worked tirelessly over the years in enhancing the town and cultivating small areas, hitherto unused land, for floral displays.  Their hard work has won them many gold awards both in national and international competitions over the years,

The photo shows Mrs Hoyles being presented with, and very appropriately, a basket of flowers by  Brother President Tom Ibison in appreciation for her interesting talk.

CHORLEY CIRCLE (23) – PRESIDENT’S SUNDAY & CLERGY LUNCH

Chorley Circle President, David Walmsley, combined his recent President’s Sunday with the Circle’s Clergy Lunch. The day started with Holy Mass at St. Gregory’s, Chorley, and continued with lunch at Shaw Hill Golf & Country Club.

Pictured (from left to right) are Chorley Circle Vice President Bill Critchley, Fr. Kevin Smith, Bishop Hryhoriy (pronounced Gregori) Komar, Fr. Francis Marsden, and Chorley Circle President David Walmsley.

Bishop Hryhoriy, a good friend of Fr. Marsden, is Auxiliary Bishop of Drohobych of the Ukrainians and titular Bishop of Acci (near Guadix in Spain). He was ordained Bishop in August 2014, at which time he was the second-youngest Bishop in the world at the age of 38.

Accompanying Bishop Hryhoriy was seminarian Andriy Kuzma, who is about to start his fifth year of studies at the Drohobych Spiritual Seminary of the blessed priest martyrs Severin, Vitaliy and Yakov. These three were priests of Drohobych murdered by the Soviets during and after the war.

International Skittles

On Thursday 6th August, Broughton-in-Craven Circle held their annual 'International Skittles' competition.
The event was to raise money for the President's charity, this year street children in Bolivia. Each competitor had two bowls to knock down nine pins. If they scored a 'strike' they got an extra ball.
It was a great evening, well attended by Province 10 and raised much needed funds for this worthy cause. The eventual winner was Brother Bernard Swarbrick, a joint member of Broughton and Burnley Circles. Bernard is also Provincial Chamberlain.
We were all impressed with his 'swerving' style which proved most effective. Runner up was Brother Pius Adefuye of Broughton-in-Craven Circle. A excellent evening was had by all and we look forward to next year wondering if Bernard will still have what it takes to defend his position.
